Taobao vs Weidian vs 1688: differences and where to start
Three Chinese marketplaces, three kinds of sellers. Here’s what changes when your agent buys from each.
On this page
Taobao vs Weidian vs 1688 comes down to who sells there and how. Taobao is Alibaba’s big consumer marketplace. Weidian is a shop platform run by a separate company, home to many small sellers. 1688 is Alibaba’s wholesale site, made for buying in bulk. Through an agent the basics stay the same: you paste the item link, and your agent buys the item and ships it to you.
For your first order, stick to Taobao and Weidian. 1688 adds minimum quantities and price tiers, so leave it until you know how those work.
Taobao vs Weidian vs 1688: pros and cons
| Platform | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Taobao | One search covers many sellers. Listings show buyer reviews. No minimum order. | Reviews can be faked. The first price you see may not be the price of your variant. |
| Weidian | Many small sellers run their own shop here, and single items are normal. | You usually need the exact item link. A shop link isn’t enough, and short share links can fail. |
| 1688 | Factory and wholesale prices. The more you buy, the lower the unit price. | Minimum order quantities, price tiers to read, and the site is in Chinese. |
Taobao: Alibaba’s big marketplace
Alibaba Group founded Taobao in 2003. It’s a consumer marketplace where small businesses and individual sellers list single items, so one search covers lots of shops. Brand flagship stores on Tmall, Alibaba’s sister site, are reachable through the Taobao app too.
Listings usually show buyer reviews. Treat them as a hint, not proof, since reviews can be faked. Check the price of your exact color and size, then judge the item by your own QC photos (photos your agent takes of your actual item).
Weidian: sellers with their own shops
Weidian isn’t part of Alibaba. The footer of weidian.com names its operator as Beijing Koudai Fashion Technology (北京口袋时尚科技有限公司). Its homepage pitches a free WeChat shop that sellers can open in about a minute, and many small sellers run their stores there.
You’ll usually reach a Weidian item through a shared link: from the seller, a Reddit post or a Yupoo album (a seller’s photo catalog). Make sure it’s an item link. A shop link opens the whole store, and your agent can’t tell which piece you want.
1688: wholesale with minimum orders
1688 is Alibaba’s domestic wholesale marketplace, founded in 1999. Most sellers are factories and wholesalers, many Taobao sellers buy their stock there, and the site is in Chinese. For you, that means:
- Minimum order quantity. Many listings set a minimum number of pieces, some also a minimum spend. Some start at one or two pieces, while a factory listing can need 1,000.
- Price tiers. The unit price drops as the quantity goes up, so the lowest price on a listing usually needs the biggest order. Look for the price at the quantity you’ll actually buy.
- Your agent follows the minimum. Superbuy’s help center says an order below the seller’s minimum is invalid, and you’d have to place a new one.
Bulk prices don’t make bulk buying a good idea. Items with fake logos are trademark infringement, customs can seize them, and in some countries, like France, even buying them is illegal. Only buy what you’ll wear yourself, never to resell.
How each link looks
Your agent needs the item link, and the item number in it is what counts:
- Taobao: item.taobao.com/item.htm?id= plus the item number. Tmall links carry the number after id= too.
- Weidian: weidian.com/item.html?itemID= plus the item number.
- 1688: detail.1688.com/offer/ plus the item number and .html.
Links copied from the apps can be short links like m.tb.cn (Taobao) or k.youshop10.com (Weidian). They sometimes fail, so open the link and copy the full address. The link converter turns Taobao, Weidian and 1688 links into Superbuy or JoyaGoo links.
What changes at your agent
Superbuy and JoyaGoo both take links from all three. Some costs and extras depend on the platform or the seller, so check them on your order. At Superbuy, as of October 2026:
- Fees: its help center lists no purchasing service fee for Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and Weidian. Its fee structure page doesn’t name Weidian, so check the fee at checkout. Shipping and extras still cost money.
- Photos: Taobao and Weidian orders come with three standard photos, and Weidian orders get three extra detail photos for free. Some 1688 orders get no standard photos.
- China shipping: if one seller packs several of your items into one parcel, you usually pay that seller’s shipping to the warehouse once.
Using JoyaGoo? It says its shopping agent service is free. Check its order page for extras and photos on your item. Whatever the platform, judge the item by photos of your own order. If none are included, ask your agent what they cost.
Which one to start with
- You already have a link: use the platform it’s on. Taobao and Weidian both work fine for single items.
- You’re searching yourself: start on Taobao. One search covers many sellers, and reviews give you something to compare. See how to find items.
- You’re eyeing 1688: wait until your first order has arrived. Then order only if the minimum fits what you need.
First order? The step by step buying guide takes you from link to parcel.
Questions?
Is Weidian owned by Alibaba?
No. Weidian’s own site names its operator as Beijing Koudai Fashion Technology. Taobao and 1688 both belong to Alibaba Group.
What is 1688 used for?
It’s Alibaba’s wholesale marketplace for China. Factories and wholesalers sell there, often with minimum order quantities and lower unit prices for bigger orders.
Can you buy a single item on 1688?
Sometimes. Some listings start at one or two pieces, others need far more. Your agent has to meet the seller’s minimum, so check it before you order.
Is Taobao or Weidian better for buying through an agent?
Neither is better across the board. Buy where the seller lists the item, check the exact variant and price, and judge it by your own QC photos.
Can I use the same agent for Taobao, Weidian and 1688?
Yes. Superbuy and JoyaGoo both take links from all three, and our link converter handles each. Fees and included photos can differ by platform, so check at checkout.
Where is the item ID in a Taobao or Weidian link?
On Taobao it’s the number after id=, on Weidian the number after itemID=. On 1688 it’s the number after /offer/ in the link.
