Rep scams: how to avoid fake agents, DMs and risky payments
The short version: log in and pay only on your agent’s real site or app. Here’s how to spot everything else.
On this page
Rep scams usually follow one pattern: they get you off your agent’s real website or app and make you pay a person directly. So when you buy from China, log in and pay only on your agent’s own site or app. Treat every DM offering a link, a deal or help as a warning sign.
Already sent money? Ask your bank, card issuer or payment app to reverse the payment right away. Steps are at the end.
Fake agent sites and look alike addresses
Scam sites copy an agent’s design and use an address that’s one letter off, has an extra word or a different ending. They want your login, card details or a top up.
- Type the address yourself or use a bookmark: Superbuy is superbuy.com, JoyaGoo is joyagoo.com. Our Agents page links to both.
- Install agent apps only from the App Store or Google Play, never from a link in a chat.
- Check the address bar before you log in or pay, especially after clicking a link.
Phishing links in DMs and comments
Phishing messages try to get you to log in or pay on a fake page, like “your order has a problem” or “claim your coupon”, sometimes behind a short link that hides the real address. The US FTC’s advice: don’t use the link, go to the company through a website you know is real.
Rep scams in DMs: cheaper links, QC services and middlemen
- Cheaper agent link or secret coupon: at best a referral link, at worst a fake site. Check coupons in your own agent account.
- QC service: only your agent’s warehouse has your item, so real QC photos (pictures of your actual item) come from your agent. Check them with our QC photo checklist.
- Middleman who orders for you: you’d be paying a stranger, with no order in your own agent account. No QC, return or refund through your agent.
- Account help: never share your password or a login code with anyone.
Why paying outside your agent removes protection
Pay at your agent’s checkout and your order, QC photos, returns and refunds run through your account. Money sent straight to a seller or stranger skips all that. Superbuy’s service terms even say it doesn’t accept conditions agreed between you and a seller. Watch out when someone asks for:
- PayPal Friends and Family: PayPal lists these payments as not eligible for Purchase Protection. PayPal also excludes items that violate its policies.
- Crypto: the FTC says crypto payments usually can’t be reversed and don’t come with legal protections.
- Gift cards: the FTC says only scammers tell you to pay with a gift card.
- WeChat Pay, Alipay or a bank transfer to a person: your agent never gets that money, so it can’t check the item or refund you.
The method isn’t the problem, the receiver is: Superbuy itself lists WeChat Pay as a top up method. See paying your agent for the options.
Fake giveaways and fake support
A real giveaway post says who will contact the winners. On Reddit, check that whoever DMs you about a win is a moderator of that community (mod list: sidebar on the web, About tab in the app). Anyone asking for a fee, card details or your agent login is a scammer. As the FTC puts it, real prizes are free.
As of October 2026, Superbuy’s help center lists its support channels: chat and tickets on its own site, email to [email protected] and a phone hotline. A “support agent” who DMs you first on Reddit, Discord, Telegram or WhatsApp isn’t on that list. For JoyaGoo, start from joyagoo.com, not a link someone sends you.
Too good to be true prices and fake proof
A price far below what the same item usually costs, pressure to pay now, or a deal that only exists in DMs: walk away. Photos, reviews and sales numbers can be copied or faked. Judge your item by your own QC photos, and use a reverse image search to see if a photo shows up elsewhere. Ordering from a photo album? Read our Yupoo guide first.
One risk that isn’t a scam: items with fake logos are trademark infringement, customs can seize them, and in some countries, like France, even buying them is illegal.
Protect your agent account
- Use a strong password you don’t use anywhere else, for your email too. The UK’s NCSC warns that criminals can use your email to get into other accounts.
- Turn on two step verification if your agent offers it (check its help center).
- Think your password leaked? Change it on the real site right away. On Superbuy that’s under My Superbuy, Security.
What to do if you got scammed
- Stop paying. Don’t pay to unlock a refund or prize: the FTC says never pay upfront for refund help.
- Contact whoever moved the money, right away: your bank or card issuer, PayPal or your payment app, the gift card company or the crypto exchange. Ask them to reverse the payment (FTC steps).
- Typed your password on a fake site? Change it on the real site, turn on two step verification if offered and tell your agent’s support.
- Keep evidence: screenshots of the chat and profile, links, receipts and transaction IDs.
- Report it: report the account on Reddit and send a modmail to r/FashionReps2. Then report the fraud to your country’s consumer protection or fraud reporting service, like Canada’s anti fraud centre, or your local police.
Questions?
How do I know if an agent website is fake?
Check the address before you log in: Superbuy is superbuy.com and JoyaGoo is joyagoo.com. If you came from a DM link or the address looks slightly off, close it and type the address yourself.
Does PayPal Friends and Family have buyer protection?
No. PayPal lists Friends and Family payments as not eligible for its Purchase Protection, so don’t use it to pay a seller or a stranger.
Is it safe to pay a rep seller directly?
It skips your agent, so there’s no QC, return or agent refund for that money. Order through your agent’s own checkout instead.
Someone DMed me that I won a Reddit giveaway. Is it real?
A real giveaway post says who contacts the winners, and on Reddit you can check that the sender is a moderator of that community. Anyone asking for a fee to claim a prize is a scammer.
What should I do if I got scammed buying reps?
Contact your bank, card issuer or payment app right away and ask them to reverse the payment. Then change any password you shared, keep screenshots and report the account.
Can I get my money back after paying with crypto or a gift card?
Often not, since crypto payments usually can’t be reversed. Contact the exchange or the gift card company right away anyway and ask for a refund.
